GrandmotherKOHKUM

Grandmother's Bay is a very new settlement. The people have always hunted, fished, and camped in the area and one legend has it that Walter McKenzie's kohkum (grandmother) and her husband Phillip McKenzie had a trap line in the area. They had eleven children some of whom also settled in here. Even before that Samson tells me the grandmothers were left in this area when the people went further up the river. This also contributed to the name sticking to the area .

Today Grandmother's Bay is a thriving friendly community with a store, gas station, health clinic, school, and now a road that connects it to Highway 102 just 12kms away. In the summer planes land and take off the lake constantly. There are canoes for rent and local people who know all the fishing holes. Photo opportunities abound in this beautiful and dynamic area. Local artifacts are still created. For more information contact the band hall at the above number.

The store and gas station are modern and environmentally friendly. It stocks food, confections, clothing, and other necessities. The staff are friendly and very helpful.

The Health Clinic is modern and fully staffed with access to air ambulance if necessary. It is easily accessible in the community.

I would greatly appreciate any information, legend or documented, that could be contributed to this web site. Thank you!
