These pictures cannot show the true beauty that is everywhere you look around Grandmother's Bay. Each season's activities have their own sights, sounds, smells and feel. During the summer, paddling quietly along Otter Lake, running the rapids on the Churchill River (Otter Rapids), camping in the nearby campgrounds, walking the trails, and boating to the best fishing holes are some great activities. Winter is the time for ice fishing, snowmobile poker rally and dance, snowmobiling for the fun of it, and hunting. Wood gathering was a very prevalent activity as well, especially if you wanted a warm house. Today, many of the community members are provided with firewood. The Band hires local men on a seasonal basis to cut down, buck and split wood for Elders, Social Assistance Clients, The Sick, and Disabled. Each Spring and Fall brings annual Cultural Camps. In the Spring Elders and younger community members practice an old tradition, making birch syrup. The word is a misnomer in that the syrup is not used as the syrup we come to know, but is rather consumed as a drink. In the Fall, the hunters are out looking to meet a moose. There are others, the trappers that are preparing their cabins for the winter. Then, there is the Fall Fish Derby for the Hardy Souls because by the end of September, it can get COLD. But, it seems that is where you find the big walleye. Sept 2007 walleye was over six pounds. In the July Derby your lucky to get one at four pounds.

The youngsters will soon be playing hockey under a Fabric-Cover-All Rink, with the construction beginning October 4th, 2007. When the snow comes the kids can snow slide on their special slopes, that are plentiful here. Some are basically sliding down snow covered rocks. They have school dances, attend community computer access times, learn square dancing, practice cooking in the Servery, and sing joyfully in sing along. Season tickets to the La Ronge Ice Wolves are bought so that children with chaperones can attend hockey games in La Ronge. The kids love the 104 kilometre trip there. Also, PAGC sponsors quite a large number of activities in Prince Albert as well. This is another opportunity for the school to plan trips to the city.

This site is visually oriented. Most pages consist of one or more pictures. Clicking on the thumbnail image will usually bring up a midsize picture.

Today Grandmother's Bay is a thriving friendly community with a locally-owned store, gas and oil is available but we are still working on getting tire changing equipment and a repair shop, we have a health clinic, a visiting medical residence and garage is being built, Our school is K-9. GMB will see a Fabric Covered Rink to be built during October 2007. A tote road connects GMB to Highway 102 just 12 kms away. Golden Band Resources has a gold mine starting up nearby called the Bingo Mine which will have the ore refined into gold bars at the old Jolu Minesite. These mining activities may provide GMB with a lot of opportunities especially with work creation. In the summer planes land and take off the lake constantly. There are canoes for rent and local people who know all the fishing holes. Photo opportunities abound in this beautiful region of the precambrian Shield.
