It is surrounded by very large playing fields, a soon to be constructed Fabric indoor
hockey
rink, and a paved parking lot with winter plug-ins.
If you
look across the parking lot you can see magnificent Otter Lake through the trees.
Otter Lake is one of the many slower and deeper parts of the Churchill River
on
it's journey to the sea. One local legend says Grandmother
(kohkum) chose this spot
for her trapline and the village grew from there. Another local legend says that
even before that, Kohkum were left in this area while the more fit went
up
the Otter Rapids to other hunting areas. And hence the name Kohkum Bay. Given
the beauty and convenience of the area, it
is
easy to see how the trapline got started and people started living here full
time.
